TWNIC: Smartphone Becomes the Main Device to Access Wireless Internet in Taiwan
January 02, 2014

Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) released its 2013 survey of wireless Internet usage in Taiwan, indicating that smartphone has replaced notebook PC for the first time to become the major device for wireless Internet connection in the island, reported Commercial Times on January 2. Around 60.26% of the respondents aged 12 or above have used wireless Internet (including mobile Internet) in the past six months, an increase of 13.03 percentage points compared to 2012. For accessing wireless Internet, 77.08% of the interviewees use smartphones while 35.66% use notebook PCs, down from 74.33% in 2011 and 53.66% in 2012. When it comes to connecting mobile Internet, 91.2% of the respondents said they rely on smartphones. TWNIC reckons that the high portability, ease of use, and lower prices of smartphones are the major drivers behind this trend.
